My advice: Play the game.

My secondary notes:
If you want to focus in air, be an elementalist. Air has shorter casting times then needed if you want to make use of Fast Casting.

Air is a PvP element: Fire is a PvE element.

If you go fire, Mesmer could help with the long cast times.

I started as an Me/E, and found Being a fast-casting elementalist to be unfulfilling. Maybe it's just me.

TGgold covered pretty much everything, mesmers pretending to be eles have always amused me since they do less damage. Speed is not greatly important in PvE.

PvP only happens in designated arenas. It is, however, not the secondary part of this game to many, I assure you. A good PvE build for you would probably be to start over as an ele. If you really want to do high damage in PvE, the elementalist provides all the large numbers you could possibly want. Mesmer damage tends to be more hidden, you won't see a huge amount of big numbers except in certain situations.
